What do I need to use Daylight Viewfinder?

In order to use the Daylight Viewfinder, you need: (1) the eyepiece, available for purchase here on this web site, and (2) the free app from the Apple app store. The two are used together.

What products can this be used with?

The Daylight Viewfinder supports all iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads with retina displays. Full requirements here.

Will the Daylight Viewfinder work with the iPhone 3GS?

No, the 3GS does not have a retina display, so the viewfinder resolution would not be adequate. We are not supporting it for that reason.

Does the Daylight Viewfinder support the iPad 2 or iPad mini?

No, like the iPhone 3GS, iPads without retina displays are not supported.

What about other platforms (e.g. Android)?

We now have an Android version of the app available for beta testing. Send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the model and operating system version of your phone and if it is one we need a beta tester for we’ll send you a viewfinder for free (US addresses only). All we ask is that you give us feedback on the app.

What do I get when I purchase the Daylight Viewfinder?

You will receive the eyepiece and a soft protective pouch. The app is available for free on the Apple app store.

How do I use the eyepiece and app?

The app won't run! What's wrong?

You probably just need to give the app access to the microphone and camera roll. Go to Settings/Privacy/Microphone and Settings/Privacy/Photos and turn on the switches for "Viewfinder".

The viewfinder image is blurry. What's wrong?

You need to adjust the eyepiece to your eyesight, see instructions here.

Does the app support Apple's panorama mode?

No, Apple has not provided the panorama mode to developers.

Does the app support video capture?

Yes, the Daylight Viewfinder works great for capturing video.

Does the eyepiece work on devices with screen protectors?

Yes, it works fine with regular screen protectors.

Does the eyepiece work with protective cases such as the OtterBox Defender series?

We tested the eyepiece with an OtterBox. It holds on just fine but the OtterBox does degrade the viewfinder image slightly.

Does the app support multiple video resolutions?

No, the app essentially mimics Apple's camera app and saves captured video to the camera roll. It does not have the ability to record at different resolutions.

Will the app support inverted view for use with DSLR style add-on lenses?

No, the app does not currently support inverted view. If we get enough requests however, we may add it.

I use FiLMiC Pro for my video and 645 PRO for my photos. Does the Daylight Viewfinder work with these apps?

The Daylight Viewfinder app is stand-alone, and uses the iPhone's camera directly. The Daylight Viewfinder does not support any other apps at this time. If the developer of another camera app would like to support the Daylight Viewfinder eyepiece, we would be happy to work with them.
